Mummy’s Intuition’s healthy week in Pics

Here are some inspiration pics from my week:

Pic 1- here’s a pic of all the fresh fruit and veg that we bought from our local farmers market for our families health. We find it’s always fresh, lasts much longer and ALWAYS cheeper than buying from the supermarket.

Pic 2- I am currently studying to become a Holistic Health Coach with IIN and one of our assignments this week was to Feng Shui our fridge so here’s mine… I thought it might be inspiring for you to see what’s in my fridge at the moment.

Pics 3,4, 5, 6 & 7 – Our family are normally very healthy and conscious eaters and always try to eat fresh, local and organic foods. The below pics are some of family favourites!

And finally pic 8 is just a really great reminder of why it’s amazing to exercise outside! Love it! I am trying to get back into doing regular exercise and love finding inspiring things to help motivate me. Here’s one them….

Real Stories from Real Mums – Kate from Sydney

2013-01-17 20.14.091. How many children do you have & how old are they?
I have one son, Bodhi, he’s 11 months old.

2. What are your 5 must have baby essentials?
My breasts- for the perfect food and comfort on tap anytime!
A heart to heart baby carrier (I have both ergo and beco and we love them both) he feeds sleeps and watches the world in his carrier.
Moo Goo nappy balm.
Love to dream swaddle suit (when he was a newborn)
A breast pump- it’s really been important for our breastfeeding relationship.

3. What are your 5 must have Mummy essentials?
Yoga Nidra Meditation by Dr Siddharth Ashvin Shah
Daily yoga (even if it’s five minutes)
A good natural baby medical reference book. I love Natural Baby and Childcare “Practical Medical Advice and Holistic Wisdom for Rasing Healthy Children” by Lauren Feder MD. She gives list of natural home treatments as well as conventional medical approaches.
Breastfeeding Tea with chamomile flowers
A tribe of mamas to share your amazing journey with!!

2013-01-17 20.17.174. What is your fondest memory of being pregnant?
Ooo I have so many it’s hard to choose. But here are two, which happened in the same week, actually. 1. Going out in a tight black dress that showed my bump and 2. Lying on the cliffs in San Francisco after doing a long hike alone. It was a beautiful moment of contemplation of what my life was becoming with Bodhi growing inside me.

5. Can you give us 5 words to describe your labor?
Exhausting, empowering, stuck, supported, intense.

6. What’s the funniest thing your baby has done to date?
He has started giving mini speeches. It’s hilarious. He gesticulates wildly with his hand while babbling shrieking and carrying on. He loves the reactions he gets. We’ve started calling him the Little Ringmaster, now was just have to find him a tiny top hat and a lion to tame 😉

Bodhi and Kate7. What’s your profession & do you plan on returning to it now that you’re a Mummy?
I had previously been a theatre director and in more recent years I was managing my family’s wine business in the United States. Now I’m back in Australia and I’ve had some time off, I feel like a space has opened up for me to dream up my own business. I have a few ideas cooking up in the realms of community, art and activism. I’ve also starter my yoga teacher training so am looking forward to begin offering donation-based classes in my living room.

8. What advice can you give to expectant mothers?
Get lots of rest, got for walks in nature and do yoga, even if it’s 10min a day of gentle stretching and restorative postures. If you are new to yoga, go to a specialist prenatal class first and the teacher can give you ideas for how to have a regular home practise. Yoga really was the best thing I did to prepare my body and mind for labour and a fast post birth recovery.

Bath 4.5months9. What’s the thing that you least expected about motherhood?
How painful lack of sleep can really be! I had no idea that repeatedly broken sleep could lead to insomnia, which would seriously impact my mental health. I was so despairing, angry and broken for about two months. Yoga Nidra saved me.

10. What’s your favourite weekly activity that you and your baby do together?
Hanging out in the park with our friends: yoga mamas and babies. It’s so wonderful watching the babies interact, and mama to mama time in the park in the sun is so good for the soul. Early days of mama-hood is better with a tribe!

2013-02-04 11.14.56-111. What does it mean to be an “eco friendly” Mummy? & How do you keep it green?
Breastfeeding is totally an eco friendly act with zero food miles!! We worked hard to establish and maintain breastfeeding and did have to use a bit of formula top ups for a while but I chose to make my own rather than give my money to a multi-national like Nestle, plus I think the nutritional value of the commercial brands is questionable. Also to minimize waste, we use a mix of cloth nappies, biodegradable wipes, nappy bags and disposables. Nappies create so much landfill and the modern cloth nappies are cute and easy to use. We also freecycle a lot, we’ve got so much great second hand stuff for Bodhi, pretty much all of his clothes are freecycle or gifts and we scored an amazing big boy cot for him which would have likely gone to the tip otherwise and it saved us $800+ buying a new one! It can be so tempting to buy a lot of fancy new stuff for your baby, but they grow out of things so quickly the greenest and most budget friendly way to go about it is to freecycle, trading and hand-me-downs. Finally, with respect to food, we support local agriculture with fruit and veggie boxes from Food Connect, so now B is on solids he’s having local organic produce as much as possible.

six months12. Even on the hardest day (when you’ve had NO sleep) what still makes you smile?
B’s smile.

13. Do you need to stick to any kind of diet or cut any foods out due to breastfeeding and if so why?
We tried eliminating a bunch of things early on because B threw up at lot (coffee, chilli, dairy, soy) but was so hard for me to do a proper elimination diet during the newborn haze and bubs can throw up for many other reasons. So I quit worrying about analyzing everything I ate and just stayed off dairy because I realized I felt much better without it.

NYE 2012 Five months14. What’s your favourite healthy meal that you serve to your family?
My cooking has changes a lot since having B as I have little time I’ve had to think more strategically about eating healthy on a budget with little time. I’ll batch cook brown rice/ quinoa/ lentils at the start of the week, then I add whatever veggies on hand like chopped purple cabbage, grated carrot, zucchini, corn, sprouts (or roast veggies like pumpkin carrot and sweet potato if I’m really organized) and then mix in something like tempeh bites, falafel balls, a can of tuna or salmon for protein. I might also mix tahini and soy into the grain before adding veggies. It’s super fast and as long as you have a grain, some raw vege and some protein you have a healthy balanced meal. I also love making a slow Bolognese with beef, pork or kangaroo and mixing in kale from the garden at the last minute. (the vitamin c in the greens helps with iron absorption). I serve with variant grains (to not rely so much on wheat) lately I’m loving a brown rice, black barley and daikon radish seed mix.

Bo415. Are there any pregnancy or parenting books you recommend reading?
I love Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin, for me it completely normalized the act of giving birth through lots of individual stories. It shows the wide range of normal and helped ease any fears or doubts I had. And for parenting, Heart to Heart Parenting by Robin Grille such a beautiful book sharing the importance of nurturing your child’s emotional development.

Stay connected with Kate at Lick The Bowl

Lick the Bowl is a blog by Kate Alexandra. It’s partly about food, but mostly about life. The recipes are often created in slap-dash style as I document both successes and failures- it’s all part of the story of exploring flavour, technique, new ingredients and old favourites. I also write stories from my journey as mumma, which has been completely transformative for me in the best way!

Going the the markets or grocery store I choose real food for my family that is low in toxins. We shop organic, local, fair trade and ethically produced as much as possible And I love getting a weekly mixed box of fresh fruit and vege from Food Connect! In the kitchen I dabble in raw, vegan, meat lover cooking and when I bake I often like to use alternative flours, dairy alternatives and less processed sweeteners.

I love sharing my passion for food with my family, especially my son Bodhi, I hope that by providing him with a wide range of conscious foods he will grow up a love and respect for the food he eats and where it comes from.

Having a cuppa with Peta Serras: Pilates Instructor, Model, Entrepreneur, Writer, Foodie and Instagram addict.

599343_486392231434596_157567243_nFirstly can you please tell us a little about yourself?

Hi there! My name is Peta and I am a Pilates Instructor, Model, Entrepreneur, Writer, Foodie and Instagram addict. I am so passionate about living a holistic lifestyle that focuses on nourishing and I love inspiring others to do the same.

To get to the nitty gritty my main job is running a kick-ass Pilates studio in the Hunter Valley where I teach about 35 classes a week to a bunch of enthusiastic people. I am a Polestar Pilates Instructor and Mentor, member of the Pilates Alliance of Australasia and have recently completed my Fletcher Pilates Intensive Licensing course, so as you can see, I LOVE Pilates. I love Pilates so much that last year I bought out a Pilates based stretching DVD!

Another love of mine is nutrition and I am currently studying with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I love food and the amazing healing properties a great diet can give!

525731_453636578043495_1226306737_n1. What are your 5 organic must haves?
I consume SO much of the products mentioned below I believe these are definitely my top 5.
– Nuts
– Fruit/Vegetables
– Coconut products
– Personal hygiene products ie, I use is Fresca Natural Deodorant.
– Chocolate products

2. What are your top tips for living a non toxic lifestyle for people that are just starting out?
Start simple. I think it’s so easy to get overwhelmed so even just making a change from your deodorant and hair care products is a huge step because we use it daily. (I use Kevin Murphy haircare products which are vegan, sulphate and paraben free!!!) I also suggest reading and researching. It’s so much easier to make a change and stick to it if you know why you are doing it in the first place! There are so many nasty things out there that we consume on a daily basis and have no idea we are doing so!

559401_367022456679164_869855143_n3. Why is it important for you to live a healthy (and organic) lifestyle?
I have a large number of food intolerances, a compromised immune system and I suffer from fatigue. All due to a number of causes but most probably from being in contact with things like anti-biotics at a young age when my parents didn’t know any better. I realise I have one body that I love and I want to live for a long time. But most importantly, I want to live a healthy happy life. I believe we can do this by being healthy and living a healthy lifestyle.

4. Do you have any guilty treats that you indulge in?
Chocolate! I try to make my own though but I am a sucker for chocolate, especially brownies!

5. What are your favourite natural therapies?
Definitely energy healing. Holy moly! It’s so fabulous, especially when you find a therapist and you really get a long. I can’t believe the difference I feel in myself after a session.

550053_440562386017581_1137505568_n6. Do you have a favourite healthy meal you prepare at home?
I make a delicious kale, quinoa and sweet potato salad that I often take to work. It’s so great for entertaining too as you can add tofu, haloumi or even meat (organic of course) and I guarantee everyone will want the recipe. My friends 3 year old, LOVES this salad.

7. What are your tips on natural cleaning products?
At the moment I am using Norwex cleaning products. Basically, they’re just different cleaning clothes that have silver in the fabric so it’s antibacterial meaning that I only use water and NO chemical products at all. How great is that.

537330_432230700184083_1409756662_n8. Apart from Pilates do you do any other exercise to stay fit & active?
I love to walk. I have to walk everyday for my sanity. Even if it’s just around the block.

9. How do you de-stress and relax?
Doing mindless things like walking, browsing Pinterest and blogs I love and even listening to my Integrative Nutrition lectures!

10. Do you take any supplements to help you stay healthy?
I take supplements including a probiotic for gut health, a superfood powder by Loving Earth that is a powerhouse full of nutrients, magnesium and also I get Vitamin B12 injections as my body is unable to absorb any Vitamin B12.

942849_487136631360156_1276813089_n11. You mentioned you are a model also so can you please fill us in on what your top 5 secret beauty tips are?

– Sleep – Getting enough sleep is so important. If I need 12 hours I never feel guilty about giving my body rest.
– Water – Staying hydrated means beautiful plump skin. Drinking water also helps to flush out toxins and can suppress your appetite as thirst is often disguised as hunger.
– Dry body brushing – So stimulating for your skin and body. Cellulite be gone!
– Suvana Paw Paw ointment – Many conventional paw paw products contain petrolium of all things. Yuck! This is completely organic and contains vitamin e and cocoa butter which are contains properties that nourish.
– Exercise – Not only is it great for your mental state. It’s great for your body too. Time poor? Do plies in second position (turned out squat) while brushing your teeth for a great behind.

319958_470829892990830_258291521_n12. What are your favourite fun things to do on the week end?
Sleep in, cook, exercise, dine out, read magazines, do nothing at all!

13. Do you have a favourite restaurant/cafe at the moment?
The Galleon Cafe in St Kilda Melbourne, The BEST bubble and squeak ever!!!

14. Do you have a morning ritual or routine that you follow and if so what does it involve?
I’m not a morning person at all. Total night owl so this is hard. I often wake, go to the bathroom and make a cup of tea, get dressed, do my skin care regime, I pencil in my brows, make a Vegan protein shake and duck to work! I am always so limited in the morning I only have about 30 minutes to get ready for work.

16544_427473007326519_1001780170_n15. Do you have any tips for new Mummies getting back in shape after giving birth?
Don’t stress. Your baby is important and your body will get back to how it looked (or better!). Keep in mind that pregnancy and breast feeding is such a huge change on your body so respect that and be thankful for the gorgeous miracle you are blessed with! We are SO lucky these days to have access to amazing mum’s and bub’s classes that incorporate bub into the workout which is such a great bonding activity and perfect if you don’t have access to a babysitter.

Q&A – Ideas & inspiration for LOVING yourself this Mother’s Day! + Giveaway!

Yoga Teacher + Alternative Therapist

1. What does ‘Loving Yourself’ mean to you?

It means honouring, nurturing and accepting all parts of me equally – even the parts that are confronting. I no longer judge negative or shadow emotions that come. Instead, I embrace them and honour the fact that they have come up to show me that I might be a little off centre.

My daily meditation practice helps me create a sacred environment that is judgement free. It gives me the freedom to release any fear, doubt or negativity that creeps into my mind or heart.

2. How do you treat yourself to ‘Self Love’ and why is it so important?

For me, Self Love has a lot to do with self acceptance and self care. Earlier this year, I made a decision to schedule things for me in my diary just as I would schedule a work appointment. The result has been fantastic, as I no longer feel as overwhelmed and time poor, and somehow manage to get a lot more done.

I do something physical everyday whether it be yoga, walking my dog, running on the beach or swimming in the warmer months. I find the fresh air is a beautiful energy booster and an incentive to step away form the computer.

3. What will you be doing for Mother’s Day this year? (Or is it a surprise?)

I’ll be shopping with my mum and will be taking her out to lunch as well. The last time I did this with her was Mother’s Day last year so despite the fact that it’s such a commercial set up, I think it’s a beautiful way to honour such an important person in my life. She’s a tremendous spirit and deserves to be spoilt.

1. What does ‘Loving Yourself’ mean to you?

For me it means living a life that’s right for you. Honouring what you love and how you like to live. Then surrounding yourself with those who feel that’s important too because it’s important to you.

2. How do you treat yourself to ‘Self Love’ and why is it so important?

Self love treatment consists of listening to my body and it’s needs. Chiropractic care helps me get through each day and have vitality. Removing pressure of my nerves system helps me perceive the world better and adapt to stress as well as co-ordinate all body functions better.

3. What will you be doing for Mother’s Day this year? (Or is it a surprise?)

Just being with my gorgeous and clever 3 year old boy is enough of a gift to me. He’s my angel and makes my world stand still. I’ll do whatever he wants that day. Making him happy makes me happy.

claire-6Claire Obeid
Holistic Health Coach + Yoga Teacher

1. What does ‘Loving Yourself’ mean to you?

It means being honest about what I am, who I am, and how I behave and being more than OK with that! It’s brutal honesty, facing to challenges, softening when I’m pushing myself, allows myself to make mistakes, exhaling out all the negativity, being present right NOW.

It’s about loving myself first, as a priority and never negotiating on that – it allows me to love others more, especially my clients! It’s about rejoicing in all the awesomeness of life. I have a body, I have breath, I have a working mind, passion, purpose and love > Loving myself is about paying respect to what I have, what I’ve learnt and what I can create. It’s all about embracing my life. When I look at myself, I try and see the big picture through love-coloured lenses. I remind myself that there is SO much out there that is bigger and grander than I am, which humbles me and instils a feeling of love towards little old me – that I get to be part of it!

Loving myself means permission to learn, grow, trip-up and keep trying from my true essence. My authenticity. From there I can do, be, think, feel in the way I know I deserve too.

2. How do you treat yourself to ‘Self Love’ and why is it so important?

Hmm. Self-love is such a personal experience. I believe in practicing what resonates with you on an energetic level. Not just what you’ve read about or heard is good.

I have a daily practice in the morning where I oil-pull, gratitude journal, meditate and practice EFT. Yoga, moving my body, connecting to my breath and feeling soft, graceful and fluid is important to me because it makes me feel proud of my body, alive, open, aware, connected. It allows me to feel GOOD with what I have, flaws and all. It encourages me to live in health every single day. Yoga to me is life.

Cuddles with my husband and enjoying food – we both love to cook and sharing this with friends is part of self-love to me. Loving others with what we create makes me feel even more loved. What goes around comes around.

Reading in the sunshine. Being alone. Diving into the ocean. Eating amazing food. Self-love is multi-layered.

3. What will you be doing for Mother’s Day this year? (Or is it a surprise?)

My brother is moving to New York two days after Mother’s Day so we are having a combined farewell and mother’s day celebration at my parents home in Coogee Beach. I have lots of nieces and nephews so it’ll be loud and crazy. Just how I like it (most of the time). There will be lots of whispered words of love into my mother’s ear to remind her how special she is. I’ll also honour my sisters, the other mum’s in my life by reminding them how special they are!

1. What does ‘Loving Yourself’ mean to you?

Loving yourself means looking in the mirror and having total acceptance for what you see. It’s about finding that happiness from within, living the life that you love and that makes you smile everyday. This extends to every corner of your life – your job, your friends, your environment. After all, we create our own reality!

2. How do you treat yourself to ‘Self Love’ and why is it so important?

I tune in the channel everyday and listen. I nourish my body well, I try to get adequate rest, I meditate, I take time out each day for myself. I also have regular spinal care AND best of all I have an awesome team around me that help me to be the best version of myself everyday.

3. What will you be doing for Mother’s Day this year? (Or is it a surprise?)

For mothers day this year I’ll be with my family – we’ll see where the day takes us but they are the most important people in my life – my kids & husband make my heart spin!

I treat myself by giving my body good food and exercising.

3. What will you be doing for Mother’s Day this year? (Or is it a surprise?)
Unsure! My family consists of myself, my mother and our 3 rescue pets, so a picnic at the beach might be a great idea!

1. What does ‘Loving Yourself’ mean to you?

I have found that as I have grown older ‘loving yourself’ is really important. Your body naturally starts to wear down, you don’t look the same as you did in your twenties, but you feel just the same as you use to but a little wiser. So as I have aged I have learnt to appreciate who I am and respect that what I look like is great, just the way I am. I love the quote from Audrey Hepburn “The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years”. I think that when you learn to love yourself you treat others better as well.

2. How do you treat yourself to ‘Self Love’ and why is it so important?

I love to pamper myself with lots of beauty treatments at home. I dry body brush and dry face brush, I use a body exfoliant once a week, every day I apply organic body oils and lotions after I dry brush, I make myself a green juice each day and try to eat as much organic foods as I can. I try to get regular facials, go to an acupuncturist when I can and do weekly yoga classes. At home I put on relaxation music every day and do breathing exercises which I find is like meditation for me and helps soothe my mind. And I play tennis every week. I love to cuddle my puppy and my kids every day. I am right into self love as you can see, I find I really need it to keep the balance or otherwise I would burnt out pretty quickly.

3. What will you be doing for Mother’s Day this year? (Or is it a surprise?)

I will be spending it with my mum and the rest of my family, having a cup of tea, watching the kids play, I like the simple life.

1. What does ‘Loving Yourself’ mean to you?

To me it means liking yourself! I’m happy in my own skin. Loving myself means keeping fit and healthy, we are what we eat and what we do. Surrounding myself with people who really like me and with people whom I really like! I smile even when no-one else is looking!

2. How do you treat yourself to ‘Self Love’ and why is it so important?

Well, I’m a hard task master…. I push myself to the max when I go out on my daily walk/run, the harder I train the better I feel. That’s love isn’t it? Its not about expensive clothes or material things its about feeling the best I can feel. Exercise, music, candles, a glass of red… the simple things that money can’t buy.

3. What will you be doing for Mother’s Day this year? (Or is it a surprise?)

I will be spending the day with my gorgeous daughters. It is unimportant what we do or what I get…. Just being together is priceless.

1. What does ‘Loving Yourself’ mean to you?
To me “Loving Yourself” means remembering to honor yourself each and every day. Just enjoy life and don’t hold any regrets. In the end living each day with peace and happiness is the best way you could ever show yourself love.

2. How do you treat yourself to ‘Self Love’ and why is it so important?
Treating myself to self love goes back to just loving yourself each and every day. Try and do at least one little thing you enjoy or makes you happy each and every day. And Smile! It a small way to quickly and easily open you up and bring light into your life.

3. What will you be doing for Mother’s Day this year? (Or is it a surprise?)
No plans yet for this coming Sunday…to me every day is Mother’s Day and just being with my precious little girl is all I need to celebrate my new life as a Mother.
